In Rin Tin: The Life and Legend, Susan Orlean, staff writer for The New Yorker, portrays the enduring bond between humans and animals. Lee Duncan, an American soldier, rescued an orphaned puppy on a World War I battlefield. The author describes Rin Tin Tin’s care from the early days in film through the popular 1950s television series. Duncan and others who were part of Rinty’s story are depicted candidly yet compassionately. It contains a richly textured history of 20th century entertainment and entrepreneurship as well.
