Program Description

Event Details

Learn what it was like for one of the first American women to join the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) in World War II, through stories told in the award-winning book, Mollie’s War, a collection of letters that Mollie Weinstein Schaffer wrote home to her family during WWII.

While Mollie Schaffer is no longer alive to tell her stories, her daughter Cyndee Schaffer will share how her mother experienced the war, living a life that alternated between fear and romance, exhaustion and leisure. Cyndee will share Mollie’s war-time experiences while assigned to the Medical Intelligence division of the U. S. Army, living under perilous conditions while assisting the fighting forces.

Learn what it was like to be among the first WACs to enter Normandy after the D-Day invasion. The story depicts Mollie’s experiences from her first train trip to Daytona Beach, Florida, for basic training in October 1943, to the exhilarating experience of seeing the illuminated figure of the Statue of Liberty as her ship approached the U.S. shores when she returned home in November 1945.
