Event Details

Join your neighbors to discuss The Woman They Could Not Silence. The year is 1860, and Elizabeth Packard, mother of six is threatened by her husband for being too intelligent and unwilling to stifle her won thoughts. Her husband of 21 years, Theophilus, decides the only way to control her is to commit her to an institution, the Illinois State Hospital in Jacksonville, Illinois, with the help of Dr. Andrew McFarland. Elizabeth is not the only sane woman confined to the hospital. Elizabeth refuses to be silenced and her fight for freedom and justice led to a giant leap forward in human rights.
