“A good abstract painting can seem inevitable—less made than materializes.”—The New Yorker, February 2020

Nancy K Jensen has been involved in creative self-expression since an early age, growing to love multiple art disciplines and mediums. Every element and principle of design is of importance when she approaches a piece of paper, canvas, or corrugated cardboard.

As Jensen refines her craft, she continually allows “accidents” to happen. Thoughts come from culture, politics, music, poetry, theater, and artists she admires. All manifest themselves subconsciously or intentionally on the surface utilizing line, shape and color. She often uses common art materials like pencils and house paint, and rarely uses acrylic or oil paint from art supply stores.

For inspiration, Jensen credits her artist peers with educating and nurturing her artistic path. She also references art history from the cave paintings of Lascaux, African and Indigenous Art, to the Renaissance and 20th Century artists—Salvador Dali, Jackson Pollock, Georgia O’Keefe, Joan Miro, Hans Arp, Alexander Calder, Louise Nevelson, Cy Twombly, Hans Hoffman—among others. Each artist has their own survival drive, special impetus, heritage and background, education and talent that shape their expression.

Meet the artist on August 25, 6:30-8 pm, in the Main Library Gallery »
