Program Description
Event Details
Dreamscapes will be on view from January 21 through February 28 in the Main Library Gallery.
Art Reception: Thursday, February 5, 5:30-7 pm, Main Library Gallery
The collected works exhibited in Dreamscapes invite each individual to participate in the colors and activities on the island of Mombasa, as well as mainland Nairobi. Some scenes depict fishermen celebrating the abundance of the day’s catch, while others give us a glimpse of busy villagers going about their daily chores. Still other paintings are creations that were glimpsed in dreams, such as fairy villages amongst the trees.
Artist statement
"My work began as simple sketches that would allow me to pass the time while I waited between performances. I was an acrobat who traveled frequently and I sketched in between shows. Often, I would gift my sketches to those around me. When I settled in Oak Park, IL in 2009, those sketches evolved into larger pieces that reminded me of home.
I was born in Mombasa, Kenya. I am the youngest of eight children in a family of cultural entertainers, dancers, and acrobats. I came to the USA in 2003 with the Kenya Safari Acrobats. I’ve traveled and performed in many countries as an acrobat." —Amani Borah
